Choosing the perfect frame for your artwork

A painting looks complete with a frame. We all know that. The question is what is the perfect frame for your artwork? Canvas frames choices are practically unlimited and settling on the perfect one is mostly a personal decision. Canvas frames come in many different varieties in materials such as wood, metal, or colors of gold and silver leaf.

Costs

Canvas Frames that are made out of resin are the cheapest on the market being sold for a less as $5 per lineal foot. Then there are the elaborately decorated wooden kinds which can cost you around $100 per lineal foot. It’s all about personal preference.

Selecting canvas frames

It can be a pretty daunting task to choose your canvas frame. It can be easier to choose if you have a feel of the room you’re opting to place your frame in. It can be according to the color scheme of the room or the existing theme. It is very important that the finished piece of artwork along with its canvas frame doesn’t seem out of sorts once placed in the room.

Once you visit your framer be sure to let him know your budget so that you can be shown appropriate designs to choose from.

Important Guidelines

There are two rules of thumbs which all professionals agree upon:

  1. The mat of the frame should be larger than the canvas frame itself. The finished piece would look very strange if they both had the same widths or if the frame was wide than the mat since the mat is what makes the artwork pop.
  2. The canvas frame should be chosen keeping the artwork in mind instead of trying to match it with other frames in the room. This point is valid for artwork that is diverse in nature and not similar of course.

Trends of canvas frames

When it comes to canvas frames their trends do not come and go as quickly as shoes and clothing. Since framing can tend to be on the expensive side, you will want to invest in something that will last with time yet continue to look presentable while doing so. That being said, there are some trends which are worth looking in to such as black frames for contemporary art and pairing modern works of art with classic frames.

You can also opt for the shadow box trend. This trend basically allows the painting to be a mounted 3D object. The only key to this trend is to always make sure the mounting is not visible and can be reversed. This is why permanent materials such as glue or stapes are not used for shadow boxes.
